Adjacency comprises incidental drawings, measurements, supporting characters which act as descriptors of some absent thing. That thing is probably many things. Objects (artworks?), bodies, time, labor. In their literalness, their indexical relationship to the signified, they point outward, away from themselves. But their object is absent, and they become unmoored and abstract.
The book is about closeness, proximity to something. To ideas, to value, to… The anchors for Robert Ryman’s Charter series hold, they secure, they embrace. Felix’s lightbulb illuminates. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
I’ve always been drawn to Felix’s use of light blue. It’s never specified what specific blue to use, just the idea of light blue. Baby blue. Robins’ egg blue. There’s a fragment of old drywall from his show at the Renaissance Society with the (an) “original” blue, from before their office renovation. It’s in a cabinet, along with some paint supplies and tools. It looks like it could be a remnant from some ancient fresco, just a hint of blue sky peeking out between clouds.
